The plant can be erect with short stems or vine-like with long, spreading stems. The stems are covered with coarse hairs and the leaves are spirally arranged. The tomato plant produces yellow flowers, which can have 3-12 tomato flowers on a stem, and usually produces a round fruit with a fleshy, smooth rind and can be colored red, pink, purple, brown, orange or yellow. The tomato plant can grow to 0.7–2 m (2.3–6.6 ft) tall and is harvested annually after only one growing season. The tomato is also called the love apple and comes from South America.
